Acupuncture to improve IVF outcomes

How Acupuncture May Improve IVF Success Rates: Research and Integrative Fertility Support

For individuals and couples pursuing in vitro fertilization (IVF), optimizing the body’s ability to support implantation and early pregnancy is essential. IVF success depends on many factors including embryo quality, uterine environment, hormone balance, and blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Because of these factors, many patients seek integrative fertility care that supports the body during treatment.

One of the most widely used complementary therapies in fertility medicine is acupuncture. At Acupuncture Denver, we’ve been providing fertility-enhancing acupuncture in the Denver Metro area since 2003. Our providers are Fellows of the Acupuncture and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine and our founder, Jane Gregorie was in the first cohort of Fellows to be credentialed by the ABORM when it was established in 2008. We have been working closely with local fertility clinics for over twenty years and confer with reproductive endocrinologists regularly regarding our patients’ care.

Acupuncture, a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for thousands of years to support reproductive health. Modern research now suggests acupuncture may influence biological systems involved in fertility, including circulation, hormone signaling, and nervous system regulation.

In this article, we review the scientific evidence, biological mechanisms, and Chinese medicine perspective on how acupuncture may support IVF success.

What Research Says About Acupuncture and IVF

Over the past two decades, researchers have conducted multiple clinical trials examining acupuncture as an adjunct to IVF treatment.

Early Clinical Research

One of the most well-known studies was published by Paulus et al. in Fertility and Sterility (2002).

In this randomized controlled trial:

  • IVF patients received acupuncture before and after embryo transfer
  • Pregnancy rates were compared with patients receiving IVF alone

Results showed:

  • 42.5% pregnancy rate with acupuncture
  • 26.3% pregnancy rate without acupuncture

This study helped spark global interest in acupuncture as a supportive therapy during fertility treatment. At Acupuncture Denver, we implement a variation of the Paulus protocol for on-site acupuncture at both Conceptions & Kindbody and see CCRM patients prior to their FET using many of these points as well.

Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Since the early studies, researchers have analyzed results across multiple clinical trials.

2019 systematic review in BMJ Open examined 27 randomized trials evaluating acupuncture during IVF treatment.

Researchers concluded that acupuncture may improve clinical pregnancy rates, particularly when acupuncture treatments occur throughout the IVF cycle rather than only on the day of embryo transfer.

Other analyses have shown that acupuncture may also improve outcomes by:

  • improving uterine blood flow
  • reducing stress hormones
  • supporting endometrial receptivity

How Acupuncture May Improve IVF Outcomes (Biological Mechanisms)

Researchers believe acupuncture may influence IVF outcomes through several biological pathways.

1. Improved Uterine Blood Flow

Adequate blood flow to the uterus is essential for embryo implantation.

Research conducted by Dr. Elisabet Stener-Victorin demonstrated that acupuncture can reduce resistance in the uterine arteries, increasing blood flow to the uterus. Jane Gregorie, our founder and clinic director, has studied with Dr. Stener-Victorin, and all of our providers use her protocol regularly for uterine blood flow impedance and also for improving ovarian blood flow/egg quality.

Improved circulation may support:

  • endometrial lining development
  • oxygen delivery to reproductive tissues
  • optimal conditions for implantation

2. Regulation of the Nervous System

Fertility treatment can be stressful, and chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, which may negatively affect reproductive function.

Acupuncture has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and physiological balance.

Studies suggest acupuncture may:

  • reduce cortisol levels
  • increase beta-endorphins
  • regulate hypothalamic signaling

These changes may help create a more supportive hormonal environment for implantation.

3. Hormonal Regulation

Acupuncture may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, which controls reproductive hormones.

Research suggests acupuncture may help regulate:

  • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • luteinizing hormone (LH)
  • estrogen levels

These effects may improve ovarian function and follicular development in some patients.

4. Reduced Uterine Contractions

Some studies suggest acupuncture may reduce uterine hypercontractility.

Excessive uterine contractions during embryo transfer may interfere with implantation.

By promoting relaxation of the uterus and calming the nervous system, acupuncture may support a more stable implantation environment. At Acupuncture Denver, we recommend either on-site acupuncture on FET day if possible, or we have our patients come to clinic just prior to embryo transfer (ideally in the morning of FET).

Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective on Fertility

While modern research focuses on biological mechanisms, acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

In TCM, fertility depends on the balance of several energetic systems.

Kidney Energy and Reproductive Health

The Kidneys are considered the foundation of reproductive vitality.

Kidney deficiencies may correspond to patterns such as:

  • low ovarian reserve
  • poor egg quality
  • recurrent pregnancy loss

Acupuncture treatments often focus on strengthening Kidney energy to support reproductive function.

Liver Qi and Stress

Stress and emotional tension can lead to Liver Qi stagnation, which may disrupt hormonal balance and menstrual cycles.

Acupuncture helps regulate Qi flow and reduce stress-related physiological changes.

Blood Nourishment

A healthy uterine lining requires strong Blood circulation in Chinese medicine.

Acupuncture may help support:

  • uterine nourishment
  • circulation to reproductive organs
  • menstrual cycle regulation

These concepts parallel modern research showing acupuncture’s effects on circulation and hormonal signaling.

When Should You Start Acupuncture for IVF?

While acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer has received attention, research suggests longer treatment courses may provide greater benefit.

We recommend starting treatment three to four months before IVF, if possible. This timeframe corresponds with the development cycle of ovarian follicle, or the cycle of folliculogenesis.

Typical treatment schedules may include:

  • weekly or twice-weekly acupuncture treatments before IVF
  • treatments during ovarian stimulation
  • acupuncture before and after embryo transfer (only before if at our clinic)
  • red light therapy added if >35 or in cases of low ovarian reserve or egg quality issues

Treatment plans are individualized based on each patient’s fertility history and TCM pattern.

Is Acupuncture Safe During IVF?

When performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner, acupuncture is generally considered very safe during fertility treatment.

Fertility acupuncturists use specific protocols that avoid points contraindicated during early pregnancy.

Patients should always inform both their reproductive endocrinologist and acupuncturist so treatments can be coordinated safely. At Acupuncture Denver, we are happy to communicate directly with your reproductive endocrinologist and have established wonderful referral relationships with many physicians in Denver.

Patient Takeaways

If you are considering acupuncture during IVF, the key points to remember include:

✔ Acupuncture is widely used as a complementary therapy in fertility care.

✔ Research suggests acupuncture may improve IVF outcomes by supporting blood flow, hormonal balance, and stress regulation.

✔ Starting acupuncture several weeks or months before IVF may provide the greatest benefit, but starting anytime can have major benefits in your cycle.

✔ Treatment plans should be individualized and coordinated with your fertility clinic.

While acupuncture cannot guarantee pregnancy, it may support the body’s natural fertility mechanisms during IVF treatment.

Integrative Fertility Care

Fertility treatment often benefits from a whole-body approach.

Many patients combine IVF with supportive strategies including:

  • nutrition optimization
  • stress reduction
  • acupuncture and integrative medicine
  • red light therapy
  • supplement recommendations
  • Traditional Chinese herbal formulas

Collaborative care between reproductive endocrinologists and licensed acupuncturists is becoming increasingly common in fertility centers worldwide. We receive referrals and communicate personally with from physicians at CCRM, Shady Grove, and Conceptions, and we contract with Kindbody to provide on-site FET acupuncture in their office. We also provide on-site acupuncture at Conceptions/RMA.
